I'm really interested... how did this fascination with fabric and prints arise? My mother used to be a seamstress, and later she worked in a textiles factory managing the machine floor. I used to go there when I was a child, if she had to work at the weekend, and I had endless hours of fun playing around with scraps of fabric, smelling the sharp, chemical scent of the dyes, annoying the colour separation artists, and generally loving it. Reading your blog has really sent me headlong into reminiscence.

Basheera ! Hi !

How serendipitous. I have always been vaguely interested in fabrics, I used to sit on my moms lap while she sewed and some of my favourite memories are walking through the huge material shop in ermelo just looking at the colours and textures and patterns. The patterns interested me the most and I remember marvelling as a young child how a small pattern like small roses looked very different when viewed from far away. Recently this has become more of a thing and I often find myself looking a the texture / print of peoples outfits rather than the cut or style.

My mom sewed us some fun dresses from shwe shwe, and I was always facinated by its history and its origins. I suppose because its quite universal at the moment - it wasnt always and used to have quite a stigma attached to it - that I thought it would be interesting to find out the stories behind the various dresses and get to really enjoy the dresses for the works of art they are.

The first big sewing project I did on my new machine before 'The Circles' took over my study the last thing I sewed was a new Flamenco skirt for Alex's classes :-)
