I had the most awesome Shwe shwe weekend last weekend. It started with me discovering Afribatho Ethnic Clothing in Mary Fitzgerald Square and smiling sweetly enough at my husband so that he handed me his wallet and I could walk off with one of Malekhotla's creations, and ended with my friend E bringing me a beautiful skirt that she had made for me in Kwazulu- Natal in the typical style of the skirts there.
We were walking across the Mary Fitzgerald Square in Newtown when I saw this dress amongst the flea market stalls and walked towards it. There I discovered Afribatho Ethnic Clothing, and the awesome stuff made by Malekhotla.
We chatted a bit and she allowed me to take some pictures of her clothing and accessories. If I didnt already have a material box of home that was slowly filling up with bits of shwe shwe cloth that I buy with the hope of making something, i might have succumbed to more of her products.
Malekhotla had on display dresses, skirts, shirts, and bags all with fine attention to the details of the trims.
Malekhotla says that is she looking for somewhere else to display her products, but for the moment she is at the Square every Saturday. I have her contact details if you would like to be in touch with her.
Among the great pieces hanging on her two clothesracks were also some new pieces made from the Venda Circles that seem to have taken over my sewing room.
